(I know--it should be Christmas music, but this song is my new obsession....)

The "mild winter" of Moscow changed over Thanksgiving break to something a little out of my little South Carolina range. No big snowball fights this year, but we've still had a ton of fun out in the snow....
snow angels and writing on the cars.
An awesome sledding party at the Leitharts' with lots of cider and cookies.
And I got to ride on and drive a snowmobile for the first time ever!!

We also got up a short fat little Christmas tree with icicle and bell ornaments and candy canes.

And lots of hot chocolate and Bing Crosby.

All that's missing is the woodstove back home.

My grandparents recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, and tonight I was telling Rachel that I am gonna make it to our 75th, and then just died laughing, because just THINK about HOW OLD that would be. It made me think of this Kit Kat commercial from YEARS ago where this elderly couple shares their dentures in order to share their Kit Kat bar. So yup, that'll be the big 75th bash.

So....ok, because I haven't really posted this entire school year, I'm just gonna list a couple key words for first term of junior year and then there, you'll have a snapshot of the past two months.
--Tennis!
--"Chasing Cars"
--Guacamole (pretty much my new favorite food)
--Ridiculous amounts of ice cream. Ice cream is pretty much the official food of our apartment. And always right out of the box.

Tomorrow I'm going wedding dress shopping with my old roommate. Thinking about that ... is one of those moments when you realize that your life has changed drastically in the past two years without your even knowing it.

So it should be good: I've got my Mary Kate and Ashley mixes from Chris and my Songs-I'm-Currently-Obsessed-With mix to pass the time on the road. No phone though. I know, I know. I don't talk on my cell phone in my car anymore. Can you believe it, Ali?

The last days of summer are unraveling in a blur of cousins, packing, planning out the trip, and squeezing in last minute visits with friends. I'm really excited about seeing friends from school at the Trinity Fest, as well as Libby and Vicky, and whoever else is going to be there....I've completely lost track at this point.

And getting to meet and hang out with all the cool new freshmen....

So Dad, Matt, and I went backpacking the other day, and first of all, I really need to get back into hiking on a regular basis again. I was really ashamed of myself on the trail. Oh, and early in the morning a black bear came lumbering through the campsite. It was so cute! And also, related to wildlife, apparently they've reintroduced elk to the Smokies, which I thought was really cool. We saw a bunch of cows, and a couple bulls, and a few cute babies. And they make the most ADORABLE sound.

In other news, the car hunt continues. Looks like Brad and I are taking my dad's car to school, a stick shift Jetta. I'm really pumped about driving a stick now--I've been practicing a lot over the past couple weeks, and I'm actually half all right now. I ate an apple while driving it earlier today.

SUNDAY JULY 23, EDIT TO ADD: Last night I dreamed that I found a gorgeous light blue 2009 Jeep Liberty for $65.

When I'm with you, I feel like I could die and that would be all right...

I just got home from a week in Washington, DC, visiting with friends and family.

It was so wonderful to see my girl friends from school, as well as the cool working East Coast guys and hang out with the Tuckers and their friends. And Stanley, of course.

(Sorry, I don't have any pics. My camera is busy hanging out with Brad in England and taking pictures of libraries or something. )

Also, on this trip I've been reminded of God's grace to us in traveling mercies--while I was gone, my mom, who has never had a wreck or even gotten a ticket, and my sister were in a really bad car accident and totalled my car. Thankfully, both of them are unscathed other than whiplash, bruises, and broken fingers.

Last week I was watching The Great Raid, about the liberation of US POWs in the Philippines during WWII. I was really sadly disappointed, because I'd read the book (Ghost Soldiers) and it was FANTASTIC. How could they take such an amazing story and make it into such a mediocre movie? So I went home and pulled out my trusty old Saving Private Ryan...THIS is a war movie, and it's not just a blood and guts movie. It's perfection. I've seen it over 20 times and I still notice something new every time I watch it--like I just now noticed that Caparzo takes off his rosary beads right before he dies. I'm sure I drove my sister Julie crazy, pretty much talking her ear off about all the characters and all the history....Everyone has something that they're a nerd about--Saving Private Ryan is my realm of nerddom.

On a completely different note, tonight as we kayaked in the lake watching the fireworks, it seemed to me that there were less people out on the lake tonight, that the fireworks weren't coming from near as many directions. I missed hearing the rowdy parties from across the lake, seeing the dancing lights of cars everywhere. I even missed the obnoxious drunk guys carousing a few boathouses down. Maybe it was just because tonight was a rainy Fourth. But I think that's at least a taste of the sad nostalgia ppl in dying towns must experience. So hey, now I can be more sympathetic to ppl from Gary, Indiana.

Today as I was building pillow towers for two little boys about 14 months apart, I couldn't help but remember two other little kids also 14 months apart, yelling out "My turn! My turn!" and then hurling themselves headlong into the floor. Thankfully, they didn't then run out of the room and the older send the younger tumbling down the stairs, like I did to Brad.
